Brightspark Education is an education joint-venture between Brightspark and TSL, the publishers of the Times Educational Supplement. Founded in 2009, Brightspark Education brings together knowledge and expertise about teaching and learning that has been developed through years of hands-on teaching experience in schools around the world. A solely maths tuition support service, Brightspark Education is ideal if you’re not so hot with numbers, although perhaps not a great place to start if you’re looking for tuition in other disciplines. As with other services we have reviewed, Brightspark Education uses the power of modern technology to bring together students and tutors, meaning regardless of where you are in the country, your kids can always have the benefit of great tuition.
Brightspark Education is a 7-16 year old tuition service covering all maths syllabuses right up to GCSE level. As with other services we have reviewed, Brightspark Education uses the concept of the ‘virtual classroom’ to great effect, helping to make students feel comfortable and able to learn regardless of whether it is their first lesson of their hundredth. By connecting using a webcam, and communicating in a face-to-face fashion, students feel compelled to learn and free to ask as many questions as they need. This, as we all know, is key to the learning process, meaning students who learn with Brightspark Education are far more likely to do well when it comes to examination time!
The tutors themselves are great. Though the service is relatively small, especially when compared to the big companies offering similar services (particularly in mathematics), it has attracted some great people who are passionate about maths education. It goes without saying that all tutors are mathematics graduates who have attained at least a 2:1 in their degree and hold a relevant, UK-based teaching qualification. All tutors are also trained in the national curriculum to ensure that they teach exactly what is required (and so you only pay for relevant tuition!). Furthermore, as you would expect with a service catering entirely to those under the age of 16, all tutors are fully CRB checked and reference checked to ensure that they are both great teachers, and safe to work with children. This is an absolute essential and we wouldn’t recommend any service that didn’t offer such assurances!
One of the best features of Brightspark Education is the amount of material that is available outside of the ‘lesson environment’. Students can log on and work through practice exams, revision sheets, presentations and online testing to see how well they are doing and where they need to improve. All of these materials are provided at no additional charge to those who are paying for lessons with Brightspark Education. Once a lesson is over, tutors will also provide written and oral feedback that can help to focus future learning, and this is accessible through the Brightspark Education website, too.
We loved finding our way around Brightspark Education. Although it’s obviously not a service that will suit everyone (as it doesn’t provide tutoring services for those over 16 or in any subject other than mathematics), it’s a great service if you’re looking to find a tutoring service that will help improve your child’s performance in this subject.
